I Am the Light of the World
Because I have been a pastor for many years, I have been asked to go and testify many times in a Courtroom. I have seen husbands and wives fuss with each other and I’ve even seen a husband begging to get another chance. I’ve seen young men and women convicted of selling drugs and then being found guilty and sent to prison for many, many years. I’ve seen people convicted of drunk driving and losing their privilege of driving for a long time. I once saw a young man sentenced to prison for robbery. He had robbed a convenience store and had only gotten $13. Sometimes the world around us is filled with darkness and despair. The Courtroom is just one place where changed hearts are needed and where God’s love is felt.
We need to be reminded that Jesus died for our brokenness and pain. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, he brought light to darkness. (1:4-5) In I John1:5, we’re reminded that God himself is light. John 12:35-36 tells us that those who put their faith in Christ are seen as “children of light”. Jesus taught Nicodemus that “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
Vs. 19-20 tells us that even though Jesus brought light and love into the world, many remain lost in the darkness of their sin. There are too many courtrooms filled with people who have lived and are living in darkness. Sin and darkness are too prevalent in our society. If you and I are His followers, we have the light that dispels darkness. Let’s ask God to make us beacons of His love. (Matthew 5:14-16)
Prayer: Thank you God for sending Christ into our lives to save us from darkness, sin and despair. Help me remain in Your Light. Amen.
John 8:12 –I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
