What Will Happen Tomorrow?
We live in strange times. One day the weather is warm, balmy and 75 degrees. The next day there is snow and the temperature in the 20’s. In 1972 in Loma, Montana, the temperature jumped from -54 degrees to 49 degrees in one day. Sudden change seems to be everywhere. The stock market went down 1040 points and up 99 in one day. Sometimes change is the very nature of life.
James warns the rich against arrogant boasting, a materialistic outlook, and exploiting the poor in James 4:13-17 and 5:1-6. We’re to use our material wealth to help instead of exploit. James warned that self-confident and arrogant believers who thought they had the future in their hands needed to be aware that life changes rapidly and was filled with uncertainties. We need to trust God who controls all of life. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow. (4:13-14) There could be an unexpected loss, a surprise diagnosis, or a financial reversal. Sudden changes happen everywhere.
Life is a journey with many unpredictable happenings. James warns us to turn from “arrogant schemes” (vs. 16) that do not take the Almighty into account. Verse 15 advises us to say, “You ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” Temperatures will rise and fall. The stock market will go up and down. Events in our lives may be uncertain, but one thing is sure: through all of life’s unexpected moments, our God will never leave us.
Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times I worry about things I can’t control. Help me to find my rest in You. Amen.
