Fourth Sunday of Advent
Advent is the season in which believers eagerly anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth. On the fourth Sunday in Advent, we meditate on the peace that Jesus brings our hearts and our world. II Thessalonians 3:16 says, “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.” As you prepare to light the fourth Advent candle, focus on the fact that the “Lord of Peace” came down from heaven in the form of a baby.
During this pandemic, we all are in constant fear. Fear wants to cripple us. Fear steals our joy. God has given us the gift of peace so that we can live joy-filled lives. The Advent season is an invitation for us all to set aside the fear and uncertainty that has defined 2020. It’s a chance to be intentional about taking our focus off of the hustle of the Christmas season. We can also give to God the sadness that many may be feeling as many of us will need to observe the holiday season differently this year. This fourth Advent Sunday we are reminded that Jesus offers peace in every season, and nothing is impossible with Him.
If you are celebrating Advent at home with your family – read II Thessalonians 3:16. You also might want to read Isaiah 9:6: “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” To finish your time together before you light the fourth candle and also the other three, read Matthew 1:18-24 – “This is how the birth of Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph…”
The fourth candle is called the “Angel Candle,” and it symbolizes “peace.” The angels announced that Jesus came to bring peace. (Luke 2:14) This week we are reminded that Jesus came to bring peace to our hearts and to our world!
Prayer: Lord, I invite Your peace to rule my heart! As I end this year and reflect on your many gifts you have given me, let my life be calmed and stable in Your love. I thank you for the peace I have through you. May my words and actions be ones that glorify you. Amen.
