The Lighthouse on the Cape of Hatteras Island
I have always loved lighthouses, and the one on the cape of Hatteras Island is the tallest of the brick lighthouses. It has 257 steps to the top and is as tall as a 12-story building. In 1803 there was only one keeper. In 1870, a second assistant was hired. At one time, there were four keepers on the grounds of the lighthouse. They raised their own food, kept livestock, and relied on rain water to drink by collecting it in cisterns. The last keeper was Unaka Jennette. He raised a family of seven there and served as keeper from 1919 to 1936.
Until electricity arrived, the keepers had to carry kerosene to the top to fuel the lamp. They also had to constantly polish the glass and brass. Everything was done manually. These keeperw were called “Keepers of the Light.”
Jesus was the supreme light-giver. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) Jesus told us this to affirm His relationship with God, the creator of life and light.
When we seek Jesus for salvation and follow His teachings, we are restored in our relationship with God. When we seek Jesus, He gives us new power and purpose. The “light of all mankind” shines in us. and we’re like the lighthouse keeper who lights the light so ships won’t run aground. As believers of Christ, we become “Keepers of the Light.” Won’t you become a “Keeper of the Light” so that others will see Jesus?
Prayer: Jesus, I praise you for Your light and love. I want to be a “Keeper of the Light” so others will see You and follow You.
II Corinthian 4:6 – “For God…made His light shine in our hearts.”
