God Sees Us In Our Need
Three years ago in November, I had bacterial meningitis. It was a sickness like none I had ever had. I was in the hospital on life support for eight days. The doctors told my wife every day that I wouldn’t make it through the night. About the eighth day, my white blood cell count came back to normal, and I was released on the 10th day – the day after Thanksgiving. The doctors at VCU said that receiving the correct antibiotic when I first went into the Harrisonburg hospital was what saved my life. I asked the doctor if I could see my grandchildren, and the answer was “yes.” He said he had pumped enough antibiotics into my system that I would not give anybody anything. I fully recovered.
I may have had a serious medical condition, but we all have experienced a devastating spiritual condition, and our condition is brought on by sin. Only the death and resurrection of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit make it possible for us to be healed. (Romans 5:12) “And if the spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.” (v. 11)
Not all of us have ever been so sick that we almost died, but we all have a sinful nature that threatens to drain life from us. Verses 26-27 say, “The Spirit helps us in our weakness” and “intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” If our sinful nature gets the best of us, let us experience the life of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. Our prayer today needs to be: “The Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.” (vv. 26-27)
Romans 8:26 – “In the same way, the spirit helps us in our weakness.”
