We Live In an Accelerated World
I have many Bibles on the shelf in my office. How many Bibles do you have? Did you know that the first Bibles were handwritten by scribes and would sometimes take up to one year to produce? When Johannes Gutenberg combined the printing press with moveable type in 1450, he brought mass communication to reality. The world changed because literacy increased across the globe. Gutenberg produced the first printed version of the Bible. Bibles before Gutenberg had to be painstakingly hand copied. Can you imagine the cost of a hand copied Bible?
I went into Books-a-Million last week and there were rows of Bibles. Not only were there rows of Bibles, but rows of books written about the Bible. Having the Word of God at our fingertip is an amazing privilege.
The writer of Proverbs says we should treat God’s instructions to us in the Scriptures as something to be cherished. Proverbs 7:2 says we should treat scripture as “the apple of our eye” and verse 3 says we need to write His Words of wisdom on the “tablet of our heart.” The word of God is something that needs to be carried with us wherever we go.
Go to your bookshelf, take the Bible down and read it. God’s word will speak to you. Be grateful for Johannes Gutenberg and all those who have made it possible for us to have our very own Word of God. Take time to read it and understand it and as Proverbs 7:3 says to write His words of wisdom on the “tablet of our heart.”
Prayer – Father, teach me Your ways through Your Word! Teach me to live in the way you desire! Amen.
Proverbs 7:3 – Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.
