Are You an Angel?
The modern-day marathon is based on the story of a Greek messenger, Pheidipples. According to the legend, in 490 BC he ran approximately twenty-five miles from Marathon to Athens to tell of the Greeks victory against the Persians. We have marathons today. Recently, a man ran 100 marathons in 100 days to raise money. Pheidippides had a purpose for running his marathon. He was delivering the good news to his kinsmen!
Some 500 years later, two women also ran to deliver good news. When Mary and Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb on that Easter morning to anoint Jesus’ body, they found the tomb empty. An angel told them that Jesus had “risen from the dead” and to “go quickly and tell his disciples” (Matthew 28:7). The women “ran to tell the disciples what they’d discovered.”
We often use the word angel to describe any heavenly messenger, but the Bible makes distinctions. Cherubims are winged beastlike creatures that guard the boundaries between the earthly and heavenly realm. Angels were literally messengers and the Bible says they don’t have wings and can also take the form of a human being. They can function as messengers but they can also perform missions on God’s behalf.
We need to have the same excitement about the resurrection of Jesus. We need to be so excited that we run to tell others. We may not need to run twenty-five miles but we need to run. Jesus won the battle against death, so that we could live with Him forever! We need to become one of God’s angels today and go with excitement to tell the wonderful story of Jesus rising from the dead. The world needs to know that Jesus has come to prepare a place for each of us in heaven. Are you an Angel?
Prayer – God, I am excited that Jesus came to live, die and rise again for me. Thank you for allowing me to be able to share the good news with everyone I meet. Amen.
