The Heart is a Wonderful Organ
Carolyn’s mother has a large Lantana bush that is full of flowers. When we pulled up to her house last week, we saw not one but several hummingbirds. They were having a great time of going from one bloom to another gathering nectar. Philip Yancey and Paul Brand have written a booked entitled Fearfully and Wonderfully Made. In this book they say that a hummingbird’s heart weighs less than a fraction of an ounce and beats 800 times a minute. They also say that a blue whale’s heart weighs half a ton and beats only ten times a minute. The human heart beats 65 to 70 times a minute or about 100,000 times a day.
Our hearts are amazing but they sometimes are overcome with stress and anxiety. Sometimes our hearts fail because of physical ailments. The psalmist in Psalm 73 wrote, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Asaph was right. The living God is our ultimate and eternal strength. As the Maker of heaven and earth, God has no limits to His perfect power.
Our days are often filled with stress and challenges. We need to learn as Asaph did. Asaph learned through his struggles. He learned that God is the true strength of our hearts. We can rest in that strength every day.
Prayer: Father, I thank You when I’m weak. You’re strong! When I’m overwhelmed, You’re enough. When I’m confused, you have perfect clarity for my life. Amen.
