Water, Water Everywhere
Last week, parts of Richmond were flooded. Classes at VCU were cancelled and cars were under water. This has been a strange year with rain. On the east coast, we’ve had some flooding and on the west coast they have been in a drought. Lake Baikal is a large lake in Siberia. It lies between mountains, some of which rise more than 6,000 feet above the lake’s surface. Lake Baikal is said to be the world’s deepest lake – more than a mile deep – covering more than 34,000 square miles. This lake contains about 20% of the world’s fresh water. Lake Baikal may be remote but it has an endless supply of fresh water in a world that needs water.
Jesus’ promises of water that permanently quenches spiritual thirst (John 4:14) echoes several Old Testament promises. Isaiah 12:3 says God’s people “will draw water from the wells of salvation” and Isaiah 44:3 says God’s Spirit will be poured out like, “water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground.” Isaiah 55:1-3 says, “Come, all you who are thirsty. Come to the waters… that you may live.” When Jesus offers the Samaritan woman living water (John 4:4-14), He’s declaring that God’s promises are an everlasting covenant with all who come to Him – not just the Israelites.
Jesus is offering the woman who had come to the well for water something better than water. He said, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)
Many things in this life promise satisfaction but they never fully quench your thirst. Jesus alone can satisfy your spiritual thirst and His provision is for everyone. Accept Jesus today and accept the gift of eternal life.
Prayer: Loving God, thank You for the life You provide with purpose and meaning. Teach me to find my satisfaction in You and Your love. Amen
