The Venus flytrap is a flowering plant best known for its carnivorous eating habits. The “trap” is made of two hinged lobes at the end of each leaf. On the inner surfaces of the lobes are hair-like projections called trichomes which close when they are touched multiple times. Venus flytraps release a sweet-smelling nectar that resembles blossoming flowers. When an insect crawls inside, the trap clamps shut in less than a second – capturing its victim. The trap then closes further and emits enzymes that consume its prey over time, giving the plant nutrients not provided by the sandy soil in which it’s planted. Ants, beetles, grasshoppers, flying insects and spiders are all victims of the flytrap.
The Bible tells us about another trap that can capture us unexpectedly. Paul told Timothy, “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” He adds, “Some people, eager for money, have wandered from faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (I Timothy 6:9-10) Think with me for a moment about what happens when we focus more on money than anything else.
Money and material things may promise happiness, but when they are the number one priority in our lives, we are treading on dangerous ground. We avoid this trap by living with thankful, humble hearts and focusing on God’s goodness to us through Jesus. I Timothy 6:6 reminds us: “Godliness with contentment is great gain.”
The temporary things of the world never satisfy like God can. Money, riches and “stuff” are temporary objects. True, lasting contentment is found only through our relationship with Jesus. Beware of traps!
Prayer – Jesus, You are the greatest blessing of my life. Help me to live content with all You have given me. Show me how to be satisfied today! Amen.
Philippians 4:12 – “I have learned the secret of being content.”
