The Mighty Oak Tree at Mt. Horeb UMC
In front of the red doors that open up to welcome folks to Mt. Horeb UMC in Harrisonburg was a giant oak tree. For many years this tree kept the church cool, and many tied their horses to it. When the tree finally had to be cut down, the members discovered a metal hitching post. Over the years, the tree had completely grown around this post. This magnificent tree was a real loss for the church. This tree’s root system had a major taproot and a mass of smaller roots that provided this tree with a lifetime of moisture and nutrients.
Like the mighty oak, most of our life-giving growth occurs beneath the surface. When Jesus explained the parable of the sower to His disciples, He told them how essential it is to be firmly planted in a personal relationship with the Father. Matthew 13:18-23 tells us how important it is to have deep roots with the Father because life is full of ever-changing circumstances – trials, persecution and worry.
Our Father nourishes us with His Word. As His spirit transforms our character, God makes sure our faith is strong with deep roots, and that this faith will be evident to everyone around us.
Prayer – Loving God, change me from the inside out and anchor me in faith that is deeply rooted in Scripture. Allow me to have a deep-rooted faith that touches all those around me. Amen.
Matthew 13:23 – “The seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the Word and understands it.”
