Love Thyself: Theology & Practices of Self-Care

Burnout has become a prevalent talking point in our post-pandemic culture. Many folks are beyond the point of getting ahead of burnout, but, responding to mistakes made in the past, are seeking to know and understand ways to avoid future burnout. Knowing that self-care is more than just days off, we seek to acknowledge the faithful perspective of caring for yourself and engaging a holistic ritual of valuing our individual self-worth and practices that create a positive mental mindset.
The Rev. Andrew Ware is a husband, father, friend, pastor, runner, advocate, podcaster, writer. Many of these roles are more recent developments, while others have defined me for quite some time. I am a fully ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and have been serving in the local church for nine years. Currently, I am serving at Beech Grove United Methodist Church in Suffolk, Virginia. My biggest passions in the church are community and innovation. I find joy in living into my calling of community, by being a welcoming presence of the “Kin-Dom” wherever I go.
I discovered a passion for self-care advocacy during the pandemic when I faced burnout as a pastor in the mounting responsibilities within a changing church landscape. While I knew the importance of self-care before, the need was magnified tenfold as I struggled to find a new understanding of the church in the midst of a new community.
I am also a runner and have been running since I was a toddler, and competitively since high school. In my time as an adult, running has been a form of self-care and therapeutic release. Not only has my body gotten stronger but so has my mind. The joy of running has become an expression of both community and faith in practice. In building community, I look throughout my life to gather folks to connect with…so come connect with me and let’s grow together.
