Can You Believe It?
Carolyn and I have friends in Bridgewater, VA, who have given birth to three sets of twins. The last set was born just recently and they stayed in the hospital for a good while because they were so tiny. I can’t imagine one set of twins but three sets. They are looking for a van large enough for all the baby seats. All six are doing well and what a family they will be!
The Bible tells us a story where David, a shepherd boy, volunteered to fight Goliath. Goliath was gigantic. He was a warrior who defamed God and threatened Israel. King Saul said to David, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” (I Samuel 17:33) David was the eighth and the youngest of Jesse’s sons. The Greek word to describe David meant that he was the “smallest in size” and the youngest. To serve in the army, an Israelite male needed to be at least twenty years old (Numbers 1:3). Three of David’s brothers were in Saul’s army at this time. (I Samuel 17:13) Scholars estimate that David would be about 14 or 15 years old when he fought Goliath.
David did not step into the battle alone. He came “in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel.” (vs. 45) No matter how large the problem, when God is with us there is nothing that we need to fear. With God’s strength, we are mighty. Our friends have a beautiful family and with God’s help, there is nothing they need to be afraid of.
Prayer – God I feel small today. There seems to be no way forward. I trust You to be with me and guide me. Amen.
I Samuel 17:42 – Goliath looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy.
