What a Divine Idea!
We’ve celebrated Thanksgiving and now we’re getting ready for Christmas. November 28 started the Advent Season, which are the four Sundays before Christmas. We represent this in the church with a wreath that has four candles with a white candle in the center that represents Christ and Christmas Day. The candles represent hope, joy, love and peace. Three of the candles are purple that signifies a time of prayer, penance, and sacrifice. One candle is pink and symbolizes joy. Advent is the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The first and second candles were lit on November 28 and December 5 to represent hope and peace. On December 12, we light the pink candle which represents joy and on December 19 we light the fourth candle which represents love. These four weeks are designed to help us prepare for the coming of Christ.
The Virgin Mary giving birth to Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit is nothing less than the divine invasion of God into this world. Perhaps the great miracle is not so much a baby born to a virgin, but the awesome identity of the baby. This baby born of Mary was the very one who created and sustains the universe. This baby holds all power and authority in heaven and on earth. The Son of God vacated His heavenly throne for a lowly stable. This miraculous birth was nothing less than a divine invasion, where God became a fragile human baby.
There has always been something majestic and eternal about this invasion. God came to earth as a human being in order to secure the redemption of His creation. What a divine idea!
Prayer – Father, today we thank you that you came in the form of a baby to save the world. As we prepare for Christmas, may we be reminded that Jesus has come to show us who you are and who we are supposed to be. Amen.
Luke 2:11 – “Today in the town of David a Savior has been morn to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”
