When My Time Comes
I try to walk every morning. It seems to get my day started in good directions. On my walk, there is dog called Sammy. Sammy is a female and is fourteen years old. She has hip problems and has trouble walking but Sammy always wants to be petted and loved. I don’t think Sammy thinks about being old, she just thinks about getting her head rubbed and having someone speak to her.
Psalm 49:20 says we are unlike animals. We have “understanding”! We know we will die one day and there is nothing we can do about it. “No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them.” (vs. 7)
There is another way to think about the finality of death. Death does not have to be scary. Psalm 49:15 says, “God will redeem me from the realm of the dead. He will surely take me to himself.” He will literally take me in. Robert Frost said, “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.”
God has redeemed us from death through His Son, “who gave himself as a ransom for all people” (I Timothy 2:6) Jesus promised that when our time comes, He will greet us and take us in. (John 14:3) When our times comes, Jesus, who gave to God the price of my life, will welcome me into His father’s House with open arms.
We no longer need to fear death. Jesus will welcome us in!
Prayer – God – thank you for providing a place for us. I look forward to being at home with you. Amen.
Psalm 49:20 – People who… lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.
