My Lord and My God!
Have you ever spoken to someone who doubts the existence of God? They may seem lost, lonely and very, very unhappy. There seems to be no purpose for their existence.
Thomas is mentioned as a disciple of Jesus in Matthew, Mark and Luke but it’s John’s gospel that gives us a close-up look at Thomas. In John, there are six accounts where Thomas appears. He first speaks in 11:16 after the death of Lazarus. The well-known words of Jesus in John 14:6 – “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This was Jesus’ reply to the question, “Lord we don’t know where you are going, how can we know the way?” (vs. 5) We see Thomas as a pessimist and someone who says what he’s thinking. Thomas is often referred to as “doubting Thomas”. He indeed was a doubter but at the end he was a believer. His last recorded words were in verse 28 when he said, “My Lord and my God!”. John’s diary leaves us on a note of triumph. Verse 31 says, “Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.”
When we meet someone who has no hope, we need to direct them to the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). These four books tell us about God’s love for us. These words lead us to life. Thomas was a doubter but Thomas became a believer. These words will lead all of us to Christ!
Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for the gift of Scriptures. These Scriptures were written by faithful hands so that each of us may believe and have life. Amen.
John 20:31 – But these are written that you may believe.
