The Wise Man Saves
It’s so easy to blame our financial situation on the market, taxes or politicians. This past month the stock market has moved up and down like a “yo-yo.” Before we blame our financial situation on anything, it would be good for us to take a look in the mirror. We need to answer the questions: “Do I spend more than I make?”“Have I overextended my credit in order to buy a bigger home, a fancier car.”
“Have I simply eaten out too much or spent too much on the movies?”
Beyond that, I wish everyone would ask themselves every month:
- Am I investing each month?
- What have I saved this month?
- Am I spending every penny I make?
God wants us to live blessed, abundant lives, regardless of our income level. His desire is that we would have all the “daily bread” we need – not necessarily all that we want – and then have enough left over to be generous toward others. If this is the way God wants us to live, we must make wise decisions about our money every day.
Jesus wants to be part of your life in all that you say and do. Jesus doesn’t just want to save you from your sin, He also wants to save you from wrong thinking. Jesus wants to save you from impulsive spending and foolish habits that lead to debt.
We can’t control gas prices, and we surely can’t forecast how the stock market will perform, but there are some things we can control. We can live within our budget. We can stop living in a world where we spend more than we make. We can live below our means and start saving. Consecrating our bank account makes us a kingdom asset instead of a liability.
Let’s start living within our means this Christmas season!
Proverbs 21:20 – “The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.”
