Each of You Should Give
Scaling is a term used in the fitness world that allows everyone to participate. If you cannot do ten push-ups, do one or two until you build up your strength. If you can only walk one lap, walk that lap and do not compare yourself with anyone else. Keep doing what you can do and you’ll be amazed that your stamina and strength will increase.
I have the privilege of working with churches on their stewardship programs. I served a church once where 49% of the members gave “0”. When it comes to giving, the apostle Paul was clear: “God loves a cheerful giver” (II Corinthians 9:7). Where are you on the giving scale?
In II Corinthians 8-9, the believers were suffering in poverty because of a severe famine. The Macedonians were in extreme poverty but they responded with generous aid. The wealthy Corinthians had promised financial help but didn’t follow through. Paul encourages them to follow through and urges them to fulfill their pledge. (II Corinthians 6-11) Stewardship that honors God is voluntary and not compulsory. It is generous and joyful. Paul quoted Psalm 112:9 saying this about the cheerful giver: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”
Like jogging and doing push-ups, we each are at different levels or “scaling”. Every one of us should give. Some can give more than others but we all should give. Our giving changes as we grow spiritually. Based on where you are, give generously. (vs.6) Our God has promised that the disciplined practice of such cheerful giving brings enrichment in every way with a blessed life that results in “thanksgiving to God.” (Vs. 11)
Prayer – God, I want to be a cheerful giver. I want to give it my best effort. I know that discipline is crucial. Give me the wisdom to not compare, the strength to sow generously, and the faith to leave the results in Your hands. Amen
II Corinthians 9:7 – Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give.
