Meet Tommy Herndon
Vice President, Legacy Giving and Stewardship Development
My undergraduate work was at Methodist University where I studied Chemistry and Biology and my graduate work was at Duke University where I received a Master of Divinity degree. My first job after college was for Kelly Springfield Tire Company where I worked as a chemist. After three years at Kelly Springfield, I entered Duke Divinity School and took two churches in Moncure, N.C. It was in Moncure that I met Carolyn. We got married and had Marc and Chad while I was serving the Moncure Charge. I transferred to Virginia after five years and moved to the West Frederick Hills UM Charge in Winchester. We served there five years and moved to Ivey Memorial UMC in Colonial Heights, Va. I served at Ivey for nine years and was then assigned First UMC in Martinsville, Va where we served for eight years until the Bishop moved us to Portsmouth, Va for a five year tenure as the District Superintendent. We were then assigned Manassas-St. Thomas UMC in Manassas. After five years, the Bishop moved me to be the District Superintendent of the Harrisonburg District where I have served for eight years and will retire from active ministry in June of this year.
I am married to Carolyn and this is our 44th year of marriage. We have two sons: Marc is an Architect in Washington. He works for Gensler. Chad is an Ordained Methodist Elder and pastors New Song UMC in Mechanicsville, Va. Chad is married to Sara who is a Registered Nurse and they have three children: Sophie, age 10; Cammie, age 7; and Silas, age 4.
